Billboard advertising is one of the most effective ways to reach an audience, making it a go-to choice for businesses and industries looking to draw new customers.

But we’ll let you in on a secret—the power of billboard marketing can drive more than just sales. It can also drive awareness, making mental health billboards a hugely valuable tool for reminding people that no matter how dark things may seem, they’re never alone.

From raising awareness for mental health issues to providing resources for those seeking help, out-of-home (OOH) advertising campaigns are uniquely able to meet people right where they are. At Alluvit Media, we’re grateful for the opportunity to play a part in making mental healthcare more accessible to communities across the country.

Why Are Mental Health Billboards So Impactful?

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that more than 23% of adults in the United States live with a mental illness. Mental health issues have touched all of our lives at one point or another, whether you personally live with mental illness or love someone who does.

Yet, while huge strides have been made in destigmatizing mental health issues, there is still a need for open conversation, less shame around mental health conditions, and more accessible treatment options.

How Billboard Marketing Raises Awareness for Mental Health Issues

There’s a reason that so many brands and organizations prioritize billboard marketing—it converts. Over 76% of people who look at an OOH advertisement reach for their smartphones to learn more.

And if this percentage is valuable for businesses trying to connect with consumers, how much more valuable is it for organizations seeking to raise awareness and share support with those who are struggling?

Furthermore, the constant exposure that OOH advertising provides is key for organizations on a mission to spread hope and care with their communities. Not only is their billboard a resource for people actively in need, but later, when someone finds themselves struggling, they’ll know where to turn.

Our Favorite Billboards for Mental Health Organizations

Is your wellness organization, hotline, or nonprofit considering crafting a billboard campaign? Here are a few recent mental health billboards that have made a huge impact on their communities.

Anoka County’s Mental Wellness Campaign

An Alluvit Media campaign.

In November of 2024, our team had the opportunity to design a billboard for Anoka County’s campaign promoting mental health. The county wanted to share with its community that mental health is just as important as physical health, and desired to erase the stigma of mental health through awareness, education, and engagement.

This bright, eye-catching billboard was a fixture on one of the county’s main highways for three months, reminding community members daily that their mental health matters.

“Drawn Together”

It’s no secret that mental health is a huge issue with our youth—which is why organizations in Orange County banded together to make a difference. A student art contest titled “Drawn Together” encouraged middle and high school students to advocate for mental health through art and creativity. The billboard featured eye-catching art and a QR code for more information.

Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation

A billboard campaign for a mental health awareness ad for Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation stating "It's okay to ask for help".
An Alluvit Media campaign.

The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is a treatment center providing mental health and addiction treatment across the country. The foundation recognizes that one of the key barriers to individuals receiving needed care is often their own struggle to ask for help, and made that message the forefront as they advertised their new Hudson location in fall of 2025. Admitting that you’re not okay can be extremely difficult—but it’s necessary to make it to the other side.

The billboard reminded the community that it’s okay to ask for help, and provided passersby with an easy-to-remember URL to access resources. Alluvit Media was honored to be a part of this campaign.

MentalHealthHotline.org

A billboard campaign for MentalHealthHotline.org stating "One Call Can Change Your Life".

If you’ve road tripped through Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania, you may have seen this billboard—known as the mental health version of free 24/7 roadside assistance. The impact of this billboard lies in its actionability—making it clear to all that drive past that support is just a quick phone call away.

Saahas for Cause

A billboard campaign for Saahas for Cause's mental health awareness campaign.
An Alluvit Media campaign.

Saahas for Cause is an incredible organization seeking to support and empower the South Asian community in Southern California—though they’re quick to share that their services are open to anyone in need of support.

Though the organization offers a number of different services, their 2023 billboard campaign, supported by our agency, highlighted the importance of opening conversations around mental health. Their billboard served as a reminder to all who passed that it’s okay to admit you’re struggling and open up to get the support you need.

FAQs

Absolutely. While social media can be a powerful tool for mental health awareness campaigns, social media alone is not enough. OOH advertising builds trust and is often more memorable than online advertising, which is crucial when promoting a cause as important as mental health.

Billboard advertising is an investment—but not necessarily one that’s out of reach. When you work with Alluvit Media, our team will come alongside you to craft a campaign that champions your message—without breaking the bank.
